Straight answers about hiring a Myanmar helper in Singapore.
Most families who contact Direct Maids Hire are really asking the same handful of practical questions: how the process works, whether they can interview before deciding, what a fresh Myanmar helper can realistically do in the first few months, and how everyone will communicate once she is at home. This page collects the answers we give most often, in plain language, so you can plan with fewer surprises.
How hiring works, start to finish
We begin with your household rather than with a list of profiles. You tell us your housing type, who lives at home, the ages of your children, whether an elderly family member needs support, your cooking expectations and when you hope to start. We then shortlist Myanmar candidates who fit those details and share their profiles privately for your review. Once you have interviewed and chosen a helper, the required application, arrival and handover steps follow. You can read the full sequence on our how it works page, or start with a household assessment.
What employers want to know first
Almost every first conversation touches on four things: communication, experience, cooking and timing. Communication matters because your helper will be reporting back to you every day about meals, routines and anything unusual. Experience matters because a candidate who has already handled children of your children's ages, or cared for an elderly person, usually settles in faster. Cooking matters because the word means very different things in different homes. Timing matters because candidate availability changes, and the paperwork for a helper arriving from overseas takes time to complete. Raising all four early helps us shortlist more accurately.
What we do not do
We do not publish a public catalogue of helper biodatas. We do not promise a perfect match, guaranteed availability or a fixed outcome, because suitability depends on the individual candidate and your household. We also do not invent testimonials or rankings. What we can do is understand your household properly, explain the steps and costs clearly before you commit, and stay contactable after handover. If part of what you need is beyond what a domestic helper role can reasonably cover, such as complex nursing care, we will say so rather than let you assume otherwise.
Hiring a Myanmar helper, answered.
Can I interview a Myanmar helper before I decide?
Yes. We encourage a video interview for every shortlisted candidate, and we help you prepare questions based on your household, such as your children's ages, cooking expectations or elderly support needs. An interview is usually the clearest way to judge communication and fit before you commit to a placement.
Do you publish helper profiles online?
No. We do not publish a public biodata catalogue. We first understand your household, then share suitable profiles privately so you can review them and decide who to interview.
How much English does a Myanmar helper speak?
English ability varies by candidate, from basic to conversational. Rather than relying on a label, use the interview to check how well you understand one another while discussing real household situations such as school runs, meals or an upset child.
Are most of your helpers fresh or experienced?
Most of our current candidates are fresh helpers coming to Singapore for the first time. Availability of Ex-Singapore or transfer helpers changes over time, so tell us early if prior Singapore experience matters to your household.
How long does hiring take?
Timing depends on candidate availability, the pace of the required MOM application steps and arrival arrangements. We explain the expected timeline for your case before you commit, and we will not ask you to proceed on a candidate you have not interviewed.
What if the candidate is suitable but needs more training?
That is common with fresh helpers. We suggest writing down your routine, demonstrating key tasks in the first week and correcting small issues early. Where a household needs specific skills, ask us about additional training options before placement.
Can a Myanmar helper cook the food my family eats?
Ask what dishes the candidate has prepared on her own, whether she can follow a recipe, and how comfortable she is learning your family's preferences and dietary requirements. Cooking means very different things to different households, so be specific before matching.
What happens if the placement does not work out?
Ask about replacement terms in writing before you sign, and make sure you understand what support is available after handover. We stay contactable after placement to help both employer and helper work through early adjustment issues.
